Shanghai Stadium was built be Weidlinger Associates in 1997 in partnership with the Shanghai Institute of Architectural Design at a total cost of $190m. The stadium is multi use although is predominately used for football matches (soccer). There is a running track circling the perimiter of the stadium allowing athletics use as well.

The stadium also embodies an underground athetics centre, a 280 room hotel (3 star) and 1600 parking spaces.
